Water Storage and Hydropower Development for Africa

Water Storage and Hydropower Development for Africa
Africa 2013 Water Storage and Hydropower Development for Africa

Africa Union Congress Centre, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia ~ 16 to 18 April 2013

The Call for Papers for AFRICA 2013 has been mailed out around the world, and the Brochure is available below. If you would like to present a paper in one of the technical sessions, please submit an abstract of around 500 words by 6 July 2012, and provide all of the information requested in the guidelines.

Africa has some of the world’s largest rivers, and vast potential for future water resources development.  It is the continent with the most urgent need for accelerated development to unlock the vast potential of the region, to alleviate poverty and allow for socio-economic development.

Aqua~Media International is organising this new regional event in partnership with ICOLD and the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo).  The conference will take place under the patronage of H.E. Alemayehu Tegenu, Minister of Water and Energy of Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is the ideal venue for AFRICA 2013.  The Government has made water resources development a major priority, and the country has vast hydropower potential, of which only about 4 per cent has been developed.  Three major hydro schemes have been completed recently, and three others are under construction, with a total capacity of 7380 MW.  Addis Ababa is easily accessible by air from all parts of the world, and hosts several continental and international organisations, such as the African Union and UN Economic Commission for Africa.
The Programme, being put together by an international steering committee, will focus on issues relevant to water storage and hydro development in Africa, and in the continent’s four major river basins.  Important recent, current and future projects will be discussed, including the Grand Inga project in D.R. Congo, which could bring benefits to many parts of Africa.  Experts from all parts of the world will bring their knowledge and experience to the technical sessions, panel discussions and interactive workshops.  A major Exhibition will showcase innovative technology, and there will be social and cultural events, as well as a programme of excursions for accompanying people.

Following three days of discussions at the conference, delegate will have the opportunity to visit the Gibe-Omo cascade in the south, giving opportunity to view the spectacular landscape of Ethiopia’s interior, which is full of contrasts.

If you are active in helping Africa to develop its water resources or vast hydro potential, and have experience to share, we invite you to submit an abstract, or propose input to panel discussions, on the following or related topics:

Paper topics include:

Civil engineering ~ Large dams ~ Electromechanical  equipment and engineering ~ Water resources management
~ Flood discharge works ~ Sedimentation ~ Environmental and social aspects ~ Managing climate extremes ~ Finance and economics
~ Small hydro ~ Powerplant upgrading ~ Safety.

Panel discussions:

The four major waterways of Africa (Nile, Congo, Niger and Zambezi).

We sincerely hope that you and colleagues in your organisation will join us to take part in the discussions.  We would be grateful if you would pass on information about AFRICA 2013 to any colleagues whom you think would be interested in participating.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.  The deadline for abstracts is 6th July, but please only submit an abstract if you (or a colleague) would be able to come and present the full paper at AFRICA 2013.

If you have any questions, after reading the Call for Papers, please let us know.
With kind regards
The AFRICA 2013 Conference Team
