Registration opens, opening keynote named for first ASCE Convention

Civil engineers from across the country and around the world will converge on New York City in October for the first ASCE Convention. Explore the state of the industry and profession via a thought-provoking, multidisciplinary program that can earn you as many as 24 PDHs. The ASCE Convention is the Society premiere membership event. It is the single annual opportunity where the entire Society is represented and therefore reflects the diversity that ASCE encompasses. The program for the Convention will be of an integrated, multi-cultural, technical, and educational nature.

The Program will follow the Convention Topics listed. These topics are intended to be used to define a recurring Convention Program and provide benefits to attendees and their employers on an educational and professional level.



State of the Industry and Profession

Topics include presentations from external thought leaders, corporate leaders in engineering, corporate leaders from related fields that use or are impacted by civil engineering, Institute leaders, leaders in engineering education, leaders from cooperating industry organizations, and political leaders who are civil engineers or have influence over infrastructure.

Leadership, Professional, and Technical Training

Topics will provide programming based on the needs of members, engineering firms, and leadership issues to educate and enhance the individual skills and practice of attendees. Potential topics include leadership, project management, value engineering, construction management, risk analysis and management, asset management, marketing, business development, public relations, political advocacy, and ethics.

Multidisciplinary and Technical

Topics bring the best from Institute Conferences, multidisciplinary issues, innovation, best practices, hot issues, case studies, and new concepts.

Causes, Effects, and Mitigation of Natural and Man-made Catastrophes

Topics are intended to explore catastrophes from a multidisciplinary civil engineering viewpoint. It will look at the natural and/or man-made causes, prediction, present codes and standards and suggested revisions, effects, and how to mitigate effects by component or macro approaches.

Strategic Issues and Public Policy

Topics present a forum to discuss the progress and direction of ASCE’s strategic issues and public policies. Sessions will present current status, to drill down on practicable application of policies, how to utilize ASCE policies to affect political and legislative changes, to present case studies, and investigate future direction.

Significant Projects

Topics will present multi-disciplinary views on the feasibility, planning, design, construction, costs, public process, value, innovation, environmental, sustainability, and resiliency of the project discussed.

History & Heritage

Topics will cover significant civil engineering achievements within the region of the host city. Presentations on projects close to the conference site, especially National Historical Civil Engineering Landmarks will be highlighted.
